Mike and I haven’t been into booze for a long time. For some reason, it started making us tired when we drank. We didn’t feel fun, happy, or drunk — just tired and sleepy! Being tired is my least favorite feeling on Earth. I’d rather feel heartbroken than tired. So we stopped drinking, period.

Random thing I am noticing: People look at you really weird when you say, “I don’t drink.”  I’m still not used to it. I thought maybe it was just a Chicago thing. But it’s not. I noticed it all across the country on my interview trail and on my Portland/California trips. For some reason it makes people weirded out/bummed out/confused. And then I feel guilty for making them feel bad!! Bonkers!

Why do people react like that to someone not drinking? Thoughts?

  1. tj answered: People are so used to it as a “necessity” that they don’t understand how people could go without it. I ran into that in _high school_.
  2. janetisserlis answered: complicated but I think it has to do with people feeling that they’re bad in some way. dunno..
  3. treets answered: Yeah, I get that too. It’s not like I care if THEY drink, so I don’t know what the problem is.
  4. monkeyfrog answered: I don’t know but it’s universal.
  5. ansate answered: my theory is that it’s an easy thing to bond over, and especially in microbrewery land, people want to share something they like with you
  6. seoulbrother answered: So… you don’t drink? … Huh.
  7. drjeff answered: I don’t drink either. During interviews in Portland everyone kept raving about their breweries there and I just nodded and smiled.

  9. alinasmith answered: They think you’re crazy. Or Mormon. Or both. :)
  10. damselesque answered: People are quick to judge, whether you drink or don’t drink. Sometimes I feel judged *because* I drink. Bee your fabulous self.
  11. blanddiva11 answered: They might think it is anti-social.&maybe they feel bad because they can’t be social without it.
  12. thejohnblog answered: I think the immediate personal reaction is curiousity and a guilt feeling. Like, “Oh… may she’s an alcoholic. Should I drink around her?”
  13. jezebelthegreat said: I have seriously enjoyed not drinking for the past ten months. I have zero interest in drinking again. Hangovers, feeling sleepy, belligerence…who needs it? Not this guy!
  14. eequalsmckenna answered: It’s such a social thing to do, I think people get shocked by someone not drinking. I just say I’m not drinking tonight. People take it bette
